Analyzing TItles
Analyzing Titles
~The titles that engage me are: I’m 18. Give me a drink!; Same-sex Marriage; and Don’t hurt fluffy!
~These titles engage me because they have a title that catches my eye, but don’t give you enough information to let you know what it is actually about and that makes me want to know more about the reading.
~I’m 18. Give me a drink! Would probably interest a younger audience, like kids between the ages of 18 and 20. These kids would probably be more interested only because they aren’t at the legal drinking age, and want to know what this is about. Same-sex marriage would reach a large audience, at least for the people that are over 18 that are able to be married and definitely for the people that practice same-sex relations. As far as don’t hurt fluffy! That probably has the weirdest titles, it makes you want to find out who fluffy is and why are they are saying not to hurt him.
~I think that more of the titles are not interesting, a couple of the titles I find less interesting would probably be “A Story of Success”, “Youth of America”, and “Earth: Used and Abused”. Titles like these are very common in today’s society and you read and hear about them all the time, therefore making them less interesting. I would say that out of the three I chose “Earth: Used and Abused” would probably be the least interesting to me. I find this one the least interesting because you hear new things everyday about how the earth is being hurt. In my opinion there is really nothing that can be done to help the earth or save the earth so I don’t ever waste my time reading pointless ideas on how to make the earth a better place. I believe it is a huge ideology for a lot of people but nothing will ever be done about it. “A Story of Success” is another title that would not catch my attention. It is very common to see and hear about new success stories everyday. When somebody gets an A+ in school somebody could turn it into a story of success. I believe that we all have our own stories of success and I would just rather create my own story and make myself successful rather than just reading about somebody else’s success. “Youth of America” is not appealing to me because I’m am the current youth of America and I really have no interest in reading somebody else’s idea of what or where I’m going to be in 10 years.
~“Manufacturing Job Loss” will most likely end up talking about how our American jobs are going to be taken away from us and given to foreigners because of their cheap labor. “The Quiet War for Freedom of Thought” sounds like a liberal politician wrote this and probably ends up saying something like how we don’t even have the freedom to think anymore. “Working Women and Society’s View of Them” seems like it would end up in a story of how successful women are becoming these days, and how men are taking it, due to the fact that it’s not uncommon for a man to be working for a woman now. “Earth: Used and Abused” will most likely just talk about what the people are doing wrong to the earths ozone layer and how the people can do certain things to make it better. “A Story of Success” will end up how they all end, when some person started off really low on the chain and slowly made their way up to success. “Youth of America ” most likely talk about how the kids of today are going to be tomorrows future and how the kids today will be taking care of all the older people in 30 or 40 years from now. “I’m 18. Give Me a Drink: sounds like it might talk about how some people think that the age limit for drinking alcohol should be 18 instead of 21. "The Dillemma of Tort Reform" I dont really understand this title and really don't know what the writing will talk about. "Same-sex Marriage" will most likely talk about the facts of gay marriage and how it should be legal, that all people have the same rights and you should be able to be together with the person you want to be with. "Don't Hurt Fluffy!" maybe will talk about the abuse of animals or how abuse of animals is a real problem today. "Textbooks: The Other College Expense" this title sounds like they will talk about how textbooks in college are actually really expensive and are a big part of the tution money that student have to pay to be in classes.
~Titles that engage audiences- Short, To the point, Interesting titles, New ideas and fact
~Titles that don't engage audiences- Long, Don't get to the Point, Boring titles

Letters to the President
I recently was walking in the freezing snow to the library from the cascadia building, and as I was walking I noticed that the UW had their own covered walkway to the library and we didn’t. I think it’s bullshit that they have a covered walkway, as if they’re better than us. I think it’s unfair and you need to get off your cheap lazy ass and make a covered walkway for Cascadia as well. Maybe if Cascadia had a covered walkway more students would actually want to go to the library, I know that until this problem is resolved I will not go back to that place. So do something about it.
-Julanne
To the President of Cascadia,
It has recently come to my attention while walking to the library that the Cascadia building does not have a covered walkway. The only reason I noticed this was because on that specific day it was cold and snowy and I saw that the UW building does have a covered walkway. I really believe that it would be appreciated by all of the Cascadia students if a covered walkway was built from the Cascadia building to the library. I know that if a covered walkway was built, I as well many other students would start to use the facility more often and put the library to great use. I really hope you take this suggestion into great thought and try to make something happen. Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Julanne
My "How To" Poem
Step into the black room
Pop the cap off the film canister.
Unroll the film,
Then cut both ends.
Carefully slip the film on the reel
Slowly begin to twist the sides
So that the film rolls up
When all rolled up, put reel in the tank.
With a tight seal on the tank,
Step out into the light.
First add developer
And shake for five minutes.
Shake
Shake
Shake
Rinse the film,
While still in the tank.
For about a minute.
Next pour the fixer,
And check it with the drops
Just one or two will do.
Pour the fixer into the tank
Take the temperature
And mix depending on the temp.
Shake between five and nine minutes
Should be about right.
Shake
Shake
Shake
Rinse the film,
While still in the tank.
For about a minute.
Remove the reel from tank,
Carefully remove film from reel.
Trying not to touch the top of the film,
Hand wash the film.
Finally check to see if the pictures showed up,
Then hang to dry.
And now your ready to develop the pictures.

Statement of Purpose
Audience
The audience I would most be trying to reach is young adults. Teenagers that suffer with large or small amounts of stress and just don’t know how to handle it. Also I would like to focus on reaching teenagers that have suffered the loss of a close friend or family member. I will most likely hold two separate meetings, the first with people with stress and emotional problems and the second for those that have lost someone.
Context
I think the kids will most likely be feeling depressed, stressed or just be emotional when they read the information that I have to give out. Most likely when these teenagers come across this information, they will most likely be at school. I will have brochures available at numerous high schools and junior high schools in the surrounding areas and in the brochure have a schedule of dates and times for meetings.
Purpose
The purpose of this idea is to help young adults deal with stress and emotions. Many teenagers don’t know how to deal with stress and emotions the right way and I plan on giving them a few pointers and try to help them to my best ability.
Statement of Purpose
For this project I plan to make brochures for young adults to see, and look through. I think the best place to post them would be at high schools and junior high school The reason I have decided to make a brochure is because it’s a little more private then going on the computer at school or having a big sign. With a brochure they can take it, and look at it while they are alone, and then feel more comfortable and more likely to call the number, or follow the ideas that will be listed in the brochure.

Design Plan
On my statement of purpose I discussed the audience that I will be trying to reach, which will be young adults who are dealing with stress and emotion issues. The context of this project will most likely be at schools for the young adults to see the brochures, and I plan on handing out brochures to teachers around the schools so that everyone will get one and they can choose to go in their own time and not feel weird taking one from the hallway or from an office. Finally the purpose of this plan is to help young adults that are having stress and emotional problems but just don’t know how to deal with the problems. I feel making this brochure will be very helpful to a lot of young adults, but I also know it won’t be any help to some.
I have chosen make a brochure, I have made this decision because I feel it is going to be the best way to reach these kids. The brochure will be filled with a lot of information about stress and depression as well as a schedule of introductory meetings to help the kids find new ways to deal with stress. I have decided to make the brochure very bright with large letters so that it will capture the eye when walking by. Most likely it will have a simple title so that it doesn’t scream that your depressed or stressed out. Probably just a simple title, like “Stressed Out?.” I think it is best to use a title like this because then it makes the students want to find out more about the brochure, because if they are stressed out they will be interested in finding out more about the brochure. I’d like to list most of the tips in the brochure because most people feel more comfortable reading and having their stress and emotions to themselves, rather than expressing that in a public group.
To make this brochure I will probably make it on the computer. I will need a lot of paper, because I plan to make a large amount so that I can pass them out to numerous schools. Most likely I will have to purchase extra ink cartridges for the print as well as printer paper. I plan on printing about three hundred brochures therefore I will need about four or five hundred sheets of paper. I’ve decided to use a printer because it would take too much time to hand make two hundred brochures. The tone of the brochure will be a serious tone with a less than professional style. If the brochure was too professional than kids would not be interested in reading it. I want to present it in a way where the readers know it is a serious issue but feel comfortable about the situation at the same time.

Advertisements
At first when you read this advertisement it is somewhat unclear of exactly what they are trying to sell. I had to read the advertisement a few times to really understand what they were trying to say. I think it is a bad advertisement, because when people are looking through magazines they don’t want to have to read a paragraph over and over again to understand what they are trying to say. Also I think they should have used a better picture or maybe a couple of pictures to make it more clear as to what point they were trying to get across. The picture they used is not eye grabbing, and I believe that most people will skip over an advertisement if it is unclear and does not grab your attention when flipping through the pages.

Cycle Victoria
This is a much better advertisement, it is very clear by looking at it as to what exactly they are trying market. It is obviously a bicycling club, which is located in Victoria BC Canada. It is also very good because they give you a lot of information but not too much, so that you will be interested enough to go look up the website online or even inquire to a representative to get more information. I also like the choice of picture they chose, because it has to do exactly what they are trying to market, and it makes it easier for readers to flip through pages and see exactly what the ad will be about. Overall I believe this is a much better advertisement and I think the marketers did a good job while making the ad and I think they would be more successful then the previous ad.

Photography is my Communication
B. Becoming what I am today is hard to imagine. I never thought I would love photography so much. Today photography is my greatest passion, and I would never give it up for anything. I think the person that influenced me the most was my high school photography teacher. Since the first roll of film I developed she always was obsessed with the work I created. She was always very encouraging and very supportive; she even gave me special assignments and always gave me new ideas to try. Another person who probably influenced my photography was Ansel Adams. Adams was an amazing photographer and I also share the same interest in landscape photography as he did. Ansel Adams was probably one of the most amazing photographers ever, and I plan on following his work while adding a little bit of my own into the pictures. Below is one of my favorite pieces of Ansel Adams, I like this picture because the background really brings out the texture of the rose, also the rose is a perfect stage to be shot. This picture is one of the reasons as to why I decided to take mostly landscape and still life photos.

LA Confidential
1/6/07
English 101 02
LA Confidential
LA Confidential was a film based in the 1950’s that revolved around sex, drugs, crime, and corruption in the Los Angeles Police department. There were many characters involved throughout the story, which include Ed Exley, Bud White, Jack Vincennes, Dudley Smith, and Lynn Bracken as well as many others. A double-life is a life that someone tries to have without other people knowing. A secret identity is another word for a double life, so many people try to live these lives and almost everyone does live a secret life that someone doesn’t know about it.
Every one of the characters in the movie lives a double life. For almost every character in the film the effect of the double life has made them forget the life that they had in the past. For example, Jack Vincennes even forgot why he became a cop in the first place. In the result of having theses double lives the characters in the film are able to do certain things. Because of Bud Whites past when his father beat his mother to death with a crow bar he is able to protect women, and go to the extreme when he see’s a woman that is or has been beaten. A few negative aspects of a double life are very apparent; Dudley Smith had the worst second life from the whole film. He was heavily into the underground world, including drugs and organized crime, even to the highest extreme of murder.
Having a secret identity that no one knows about or even a few know about can be both empowering and damaging. I think that in the case of having a double life like Bud White could be very empowering. Part of Bud’s double life was that he had such a care for woman and protected them from being hurt, and that is what empowers him. Although he damaged himself when he let go and hurt Lynn Bracken. On the other side, Dudley Smith had a double life that was completely damaging, not only to him but to others as well. Dudley first appears to be a great guy, and then you later find out that he is the one behind all of the crime. Dudley even went as far framing innocent people, and killing innocent police officers. Overall a secret life is something common in most people, it just depends on how you live your double life.

Self-Introduction
My Name is Julanne….
1. My name is Julanne Payton, and it originated from the English language in England.
My mom was the person who chose to name me Julanne.
2. My mom decided to give me that name, because she found it unique thought it to be beautiful, and hadn’t met many people with that name. I was named after my cousin Julanne who was named after Johnny Carson’s wife, and she was named after Julanne Johnston, a famous actress from the early 1920’s.
3. I actually have always liked my name, due to the fact that I have never met one other person, other than my cousin, that has my name and that’s always been something I liked. One bad thing about my name is that almost everyone tries to pronounce it Julianne, and it gets kind of irritating because there’s no I in my name. If I could choose to have a secret identity name I would choose to be called Antonella, Antonella is an Italian name I always liked, and the whole time I lived in Italy I only met one Antonella and so it’s unique like mine, and that’s why I like it.
